Sentience to Protection

Sentience to Protection

Three years on since the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022, we want to bring together leading voices in science, policy and animal welfare to discuss what's next for decapod crustaceans.

Since it’s passing, crabs, lobsters and prawns are still subjected to torturous practices such as boiling alive, being shipped alive in the post out of water, or used in scientific research without regulations.

It's time to change that.

Crustacean Compassion is hosting a parliamentary event on Wednesday 10 September, in the House of Commons. The event will bring together MPs, policy makers, scientists, and animal welfare advocates to discuss the future of decapod welfare and push for meaningful reform.

Some ideas or talking points:

  • Animals like crabs and lobsters are sentient and feel pain, this was recognised in UK law in 2022.

  • Three years on, no welfare improvements have been made for decapod crustaceans.

  • Despite the leap forward in protection, with them being included in the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act, they are still subjected to outdated and cruel practices, such as being boiled live, sent live in the post, and routinely used in research without protection.  This needs to change.

  • Crustacean Compassion are hosting a parliamentary event on Wednesday 10 September. Bringing together policy makers, scientists and animal welfare advocates, this event will be an opportunity to make voices heard and see what the future for decapod crustaceans looks like.
